The year is 885 A.D., a time of longstanding peace for the Nahchee Nation—the path of war having been forgotten. Sixteen-year-old Koicto dreams of one day becoming chief and has been summoned for a vision quest by the Tribal Elders who will decide his fate. Along the way he forges a bond of brotherhood with an irascible cougar, Kitchi, the two discovering the ability to communicate through their thoughts.
When the Elders learn of Koicto’s unique connection to the cougar and his keen visions of the future, they interpret it as a spiritual manifestation foretold by ancestral lore. They proclaim Koicto a shaman and force him into an arranged marriage to the seer Catori, ignoring Koicto’s love for the beautiful Pavati, and casting aside his burning desire to become chief of the Nahchee Nation. But Koicto’s disturbing visions of war leave him with no choice but to rebel against the Elders’ decision. Mentored by Kitchi, Koicto trains to be a cougar-warrior ultimately able to transfigure into a great cat himself.
When Koicto’s vision of war unfolds, he finds his village burned, his father murdered and Pavati taken. He must fulfill his destiny and avenge these wrongs. Can he prove he is worthy to take his place as chief of the Nahchee?
